Reversing itself, FDA expresses concerns over health risks from BPA
20100115 The Washington Post reports - "The Food and Drug Administration has reversed its position of the safety of Bisphenol A, a chemical found in plastic bottles, soda cans, food containers, and thousands of consummer goods, say it now has concerns about health risks". Comment : Concerns about BPA have been ignored for years - even now, the CDC fact sheet CAS No. 80-05-07 on Bisphenol A asserts the compound "is rated as weakly estrogenic ... some reproductive or developmental changes are observed ... delayed vaginal openning and preputial separation [in experimental animals]" - The Endocrine Society report on Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals includes BPA in the listing. Last year, six major manufacturers of BPA containing baby bottles, announced that they would voluntarily stop marketing them in the United States (not clear if the extent stop of Bisphenol A containing baby bottles will to be sold abroad). |
